‘Howling at Halloween’ against compulsory charges – Saturday October 31st.
At dusk, Halloween Ghouls haunted the ‘free speech’ obelisk on Parliament Hill. Pond swimmers dressed in ghoulish garb protested the suffocation of our voices by The City of London Corporation and the threat to local representative democracy if the proposed abolition of the Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee goes ahead according to Lord Lisvane’s report recommendations.
Under pressure from swimmers, The City of London, Hampstead Heath’s current landlords, has been forced to make many concessions since the newly imposed charging regime was introduced in July, including; allowing cancellation refunds and most recently, permitting women non-swimmers free access to their upper meadow during winter. We’d like that permission immediately extended at both the men’s and mixed ponds.
We continue to advocate the indefinite removal of compulsory charges to bathe in Hampsteads’ historic ponds which have been an invaluable community resource for centuries.
